9carrots events launched the scheme in Birmingham, UK and Victoria, Canada- last 01, febby anewholm
Last night, 500 Birmingham residents crowded out the Urban Village bar to launch a scheme aimed at getting local businesses to “go green”. Under the scheme, the bar invests 20% of extra sales towards energy efficiency. Last night alone, the bar accrued £472 towards low-energy lighting.
A soul-funk soundtrack was provided by the excellent Route 49. The event was part of People and Planet’s “Go Green Week” and is the launch of their “9carrots” campaign to give businesses a positive incentive to take action on climate change. Entry was free, Jagerbombs £1.50 and the fun started at 8pm.

“We think the 9carrots scheme is a great way to connect local businesses with their community and allow them to work together towards a sustainable future. We’re really encouraged by the enormous support in Selly Oak and are really looking forward to getting things going in Kings Heath” said Tom Tierney from the Kings Heath Transition Initiative.
In Victoria, Canada, 2 events are being organised to launch the 9carrots community-business network there.
These events are a powerful way for local environmental groups to introduce their community to this new form of participation. After the event, these businesses continue to participate in the scheme. Read about how to organise these events in the events organisation wiki page.

Mr. Lawrence wine bar hits green target and installs low-energy lighting- jul, 2010by anewholm
Thanks to 9carrots supporters, the Mr. Lawrence Wine Bar hit its upgrade target today: energy efficient lighting is now being installed throughout the bar. Mr. Lawrence, who had agreed to invest 10% of the extra custom he received, purchased the light bulbs after only three months on the 9carrots scheme.
Mr. Lawrence, owner of the bar said:
We all want to do our bit to help the planet, of course, but this scheme is a great incentive to really look at how we can save energy. I'm delighted to be the first business to reach the target and make a green upgrade. We're proof that the scheme really works!
Local environmental groups have found 9carrots a useful way to open a dialogue with local businesspeople. Francesca Rogers from Transition Brockley, who signed the wine bar up to the 9carrots scheme, said:
We're always hearing advice about how we should save energy as individuals, but we need to get businesses interested in sustainability too. Transition Brockley sees the 9carrots scheme as a great way to get businesses involved.
Mr.Lawrence has asked 9carrots to advise him on how else he can save energy, and is now looking at installing solar panels. Hear about his new target and how other businesses are going green by signing up for updates.

9carrots was extremely well received at the Transition Towns conference last month. Many groups embraced the concept as a way to build strong relationships with local businesses. They see working with businesses as important but it has previously been very difficult for them to achieve. Several transition groups are now starting 9carrots in their area and the Transition Network is creating a "starter pack" to introduce the idea to groups around the world.
