    Too much
    - sep, 2010

    I think that this main community page may have too much on it.
    We don't want to confuse ourselves. Any suggestions for re-organising it?

    This community section is very open. Every aspect of the 9carrots project can be read, changed and developed by anyone. But that is not really explained anywhere obvious. Maybe that is confusing for people. Do they realise?

    why is it called 9 carrots?

    Why 9? Is there a reason?

      A: why is it called 9 carrots?

      by anewholm
      We spent ages looking for a name. We wanted carrots in it somewhere. The domain names for 1-8 carrots were taken so we ended up with 9. Sorry that there isn't a better reason!

    are we relying on people to log in and key in the receipt code?
    - nov, 2010
    by cindyc
    when customers get their receipts, they can look up on the website how the business is doing, but are we relying on people to log in and key in the receipt code (to help us monitor the sales) or do we rely on businesses to tell us how many receipts they have given away? i.e. do we trust businesses to tell us the truth?

      At the moment we are suggesting that groups (your group that is) visit the participating local businesses periodically to check their receipt books. Also, businesses will need to request more receipt books from you when they finish them, at which point you know that the book has been completely used and can register all its receipts. The receipt codes are sequential which means that you can tell which ones have gone from looking at the ones that remain in the book. There is a facility on-line for redeeming "up-to" a receipt. This facility is not available to group members at the moment but it will be shortly. I'll let you know when.

      It is really useful if customers do redeem their receipts on-line because, that way, we get their email address and also know which shops they have supported. That means we can send them updates to the shops progress and invite them to the installation event.

    what if some of their existing customers end up asking for receipts?
    - nov, 2010
    by cindyc
    and I suppose one question that the businesses might ask me is what if some of their existing customers end up asking for receipts, for example if we promote the scheme very widely. How can we guarantee that it will be new customers? What if the majority of their customers end up asking for receipts? Then they have to 'lose out' on 10% of most of their sales. What can I say in response to that?

      A very valid point. Firstly, you should point out that they don't "loose" 10%. They simply invest 10% in their business and cutting its costs. You cannot guarantee that they will all be new customers. I have talked with over 70 businesses now personally and I have never had any concerns about this so I would not worry about it.

    are there other groups in my area?
    - nov, 2010
    by cindyc
    and my last question is, have you already sent starter packs to some other groups in our area and if so, which ones? Just so I can liaise with them so we don't end up talking to the same businesses.

      You can tell which groups are in your area by going to the groups list. This is to be found in the "my account" menu after you log in. It is called "join a group" if you are not currently a member of a 9carrots group or "groups" if you are. It will show all the groups within 50 miles of your registered location in order of distance. If it is empty then you are the first!

    guaranteed usage?

    Just wondering if we have to guarantee usage in the town with this starter kit or can we use it to tempt and exemplify for people etc.?

      A: guarenteed usage?

      by anewholm
      No, you don't have to guarantee anything. 9carrots is a very attractive scheme for businesses though so it should not be difficult to get them interested. 9carrots is a collection of groups around the country sharing ways on how to strengthen community. We will help as much as we can but don't need to be in charge at all :)

    RE: Why 9 carrots?
    - jan, 2011
    by michael pettit
    Hi All! Michael from Milwaukee here. Just wanted to share, when I first asked the question "Why is it called 9 carrots?" The answer I got was (from Annesley) that it is an approach that presents as an enticement; a carrot as opposed to a stick. From there, I associated this with the fact that we are asking businesses to invest 10% of money from new customers. So we are bringing them bunches of carrots, in the form of money from new customers and 9 out of 10 in each bunch, they get to keep for free (free advertising), so long as they set the tenth one aside to do something good for the planet. This is only how I personally rationalised it to make sense of it for myself, but people here seem to accept this explanation.

    Website Widget/embedding
    - 25, jul, 2011
    by rebel gardener
    Can the map widget be installed into a Facebook FanPage, if so how as we no longer have FBML but iframe, I use Static HTML: iframe tabs application for Facebook and I cannot get it to load. Is the map built into your code or is it just the overlay.

    I also use tumblr to blog and wondered if there is any advice to embeding it there. As if I just plonk down the code on a custom page nothing loads.

    Maybe I am missing something obvious as I have been at the comp all day and feel pretty frazzled.

      Embedding an IFRAME should work. The source should be set to the map page. Can you paste in the code you are using?

      Dev link
      - 25, jul, 2011
      by anewholm

      Oops! Where did you get that link from? The SRC points to the development server (which is off). You need to point it to <group>.9carrots.org, not <group>.9carrots.annesley.is-a-geek.com.

      My mistake that the development link is obviously somewhere on the site. I'd better update it...

    Facebook fanpage

    This code works on Cardiff Transition but it is not live so I cannot link but here is an image of it.
    http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_loyfk5A3b11r08y1zo1_500.png

    It was installed on Facebook fanpage using http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?api_key=190322544333196
    Static HTML application installed on the page.
    I dont understand tweaking all the numbers but I played with it and it fits without scroll bars with these settings, it is small but hey it fits :-) Maybe Others who understand coding better know what can be tweaked better.

    **The map page is a little awkward as the map area is small, is there any chance the right hand column can be programmed that you can tuck it in if you want to thus increasing map area.**

      This is the link with the link you gave and scaled iframe to have map and left colum in view and right column out of view but scrollable.

      <style>
      #wrap { width: 700px; height: 700px; padding: 0; overflow: hidden; }
      #frame { width: 905px; height: 900px; border: 0;}
      #frame { -moz-transform: scale(0.73); -moz-transform-origin: 0 0; }
      </style>

      ...

      <p></p>
      <div id="wrap">
      <iframe id="frame" src="http://cardifftransition.9carrots.org/consumer/search?1=&2=&3=&style=compact"></iframe>
      </div>
      <p></p>
